DMK plans organizational overhaul to include more women and youth
The DMK is planning an organizational overhaul to increase the representation of women and younger functionaries in influential party positions. This restructuring follows the party losing power to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a victory attributed to strong support from young voters.
A key focus of the overhaul is the role of district secretary, a highly influential position responsible for coordinating election work and mobilizing cadres. Currently, out of 78 organizational district secretaries, former minister P. Geetha Jeevan is the only woman holding the post. The leadership aims to address the lack of young faces in these roles, as most current secretaries are long-standing, experienced leaders.
Changes are expected to be most prominent in Chennai and its surrounding districts, where the DMK’s recent Assembly election performance did not meet leadership expectations. The party is considering promoting officials from its youth, women, and student wings to these mid-level organizational structures.
