Doñana Wetland in Spain Advances Watercourse Restoration Plan

The Spanish government’s technical working group on the Doñana wetland, chaired by newly appointed water‑cycle commissioner Laura Martín Murillo, presented a progress report for the second half of 2024. Of the 55 planned measures, 44 are underway – an 83 % implementation rate – and more than 60 % of the €348 million budget has been spent.

Key projects highlighted include the near‑completion of the Los Mimbrales restoration (over €6 million for 932 ha), the renaturalisation of the Brazo el Este meanders (budget €791 000), and new interventions by the Guadalquivir River Basin Authority above €2 million. The second phase of the Arroyo El Partido work aims to cut flood risk for the village of El Rocío and boost groundwater infiltration.

Murillo said, "What distinguishes the Government's action is not only the investment, but how we account for it: meeting by meeting, action by action. Our goal is not to manage Doñana's deterioration, but to reverse it definitively."
