Doctors in Vietnam use abdominal cerclage to prevent preterm birth

Medical specialists at Phuong Chau International Hospital in Can Tho successfully managed a high-risk pregnancy for a patient with a history of cervical insufficiency. After losing a child at 22 weeks in 2014 and experiencing threatened preterm labor during a subsequent pregnancy despite a vaginal cerclage, the patient sought care for a new pregnancy ten years later.

To mitigate the risk of recurring complications, doctors opted for an abdominal cerclage via laparoscopy rather than the previous vaginal method. This intervention allowed the patient to carry the pregnancy to term, resulting in the birth of a healthy baby girl at 38 weeks.
