Doctors warn against over-reliance on smartwatch health data

Medical professionals are warning against over-reliance on smartwatch data for health decisions. While a 2023 Ipsos study conducted for Huawei suggested that 87% of users adopted new wellness behaviors due to wearable technology, doctors express concern regarding the accuracy and implications of this data.

Dr. Rachel Bentard notes that excessive trust in these devices can lead to unnecessary medical interventions. One primary concern is the discovery of ‘incidentalomas’—random findings during scans that have no clinical significance but trigger costly and potentially harmful follow-up procedures, such as biopsies.

Furthermore, discrepancies between subjective feelings and device metrics can cause confusion. For instance, a user may feel well-rested despite a smartwatch reporting poor sleep quality, leading to unnecessary anxiety or lifestyle changes based on potentially flawed data.
