Documentary 399 Forever explores legacy of famous Wyoming grizzly

The documentary film “399 Forever,” directed by Alex Stavrou, has been released on Amazon Prime Video. The film chronicles the life and legacy of Grizzly 399, a renowned bear that spent nearly three decades in Grand Teton National Park.

Through the perspectives of wildlife guides, photographers, and conservationists, the documentary examines the intersection of wildlife conservation, tourism, and human development. It highlights the challenges of human-wildlife coexistence, specifically how expanding human activity impacts grizzly populations. The film also features the story of Shayne Burke, a survivor of a grizzly attack in the park, to emphasize the importance of safety measures like bear spray.

Grizzly 399 gained international attention for her ability to raise 18 cubs and for her presence near developed areas around Jackson Hole. She was killed in a vehicle collision on October 22, 2024, south of Jackson, Wyoming. The film includes contributions from wildlife photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen and explores the community that formed around the bear during her final year.
