Dolomites bivouacs targeted by vandals in Marmarole group

Vandalism has targeted several high-altitude bivouacs in the Marmarole group of the Belluno Dolomites. The Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) reported that vandals tore pages from summit registers—notebooks where hikers record their names, routes, and intended return paths. There is a suspicion that the paper may have been used to fuel bonfires.

The damage occurred at three structures located above 2,000 meters: the Fratelli Toso and Musatti bivouacs in Auronzo di Cadore, and the Voltolina bivouac in San Vito di Cadore. At the Voltolina site, vandals also threw mattresses outside the structure.

The CAI warned that these actions pose a direct safety risk, as rescuers often use these registers to track hikers in areas with poor cellular reception. Daniele Bortolozzi, president of the CAI of Venice, indicated that repeated vandalism could lead to drastic measures, including the removal of all interior furnishings, such as mattresses and blankets, or even the permanent closure of these essential emergency shelters.
