Dolomites mountain hut closed following wave of vandalism

The Bivacco Giovanni Menegazzi, a mountain hut located at 1,737 meters in the Pale di San Martino region of the Dolomites, has been temporarily closed following a wave of vandalism.

Volunteers from the Alpini-Verein Gosaldo reported significant damage and safety hazards. These include the discovery of illegal campfires lit near wood supplies, which posed a severe fire risk to the structure. Additionally, the site was found littered with trash, including bottles, cigarette butts, and drug paraphernalia.

Most distressingly, volunteers reported finding human excrement both in front of and inside the Madonna-delle-Nevi shrine. Vincenzo Chenet, a long-time volunteer, noted that while most hikers are respectful, these specific incidents have caused extreme damage and safety concerns.
