Brazil domestic violence study: 15 women hospitalized daily
A study conducted by researchers at the Federal University of São Paulo (Unifesp) and published in the journal Ciência & Saúde Coletiva reveals that an average of 15 women were hospitalized daily in Brazil due to domestic violence between 2008 and 2023.
Using artificial intelligence to analyze 90,798 hospitalizations of women aged 20 to 59 within the Unified Health System (SUS), the research found that many victims arrived with polytrauma or injuries caused by sharp objects. Women aged 20 to 29 represented 17.2% of these hospitalizations, frequently requiring emergency surgery for chest injuries.
In the city of São Paulo, data from 2013 to 2023 showed that Black and mixed-race women accounted for 52.9% of violence notifications, despite making up 32.6% of the population. Additionally, sexual violence against women showed the highest growth trend in the capital during this period.
Analysis of medical records also highlighted data gaps, with 60.2% of analyzed records lacking information on the instrument used by the aggressor. Among documented cases, punches were the most cited method (14.2%), followed by kicks, knives, and firearms. Notably, the use of firearms was found to increase the probability of abdominal injuries by nearly eight times.
