Domestic violence arrests in Portugal

Two separate domestic violence cases in Portugal have resulted in pretrial detention for the suspects.

In Cascais, a 41-year-old woman was detained for allegedly assaulting her parents and two minor children, aged 17 and 3. Authorities report that the woman, who suffers from a personality disorder and struggles with alcohol and drug use, demanded money from her elderly parents to fund her addiction. The assaults included physical violence with objects such as frying pans and broomsticks. In one instance, she reportedly stabbed her father in the forearm with a kitchen knife. She was detained following a warrant issued due to the escalating severity of the violence.

In Arraiolos, a 42-year-old man was placed in pretrial detention for aggravated domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend. The Public Ministry indicates that the suspect engaged in repeated psychological, psychic, and physical abuse, which intensified after their relationship ended. The suspect is accused of exercising coercive control, stalking the victim via social media, and filming and distributing private footage of her without consent. The individual has a criminal record that includes attempted homicide and robbery.
