Domestic violence incidents in Portugal

Recent reports from Portugal highlight several separate instances of domestic violence resulting in legal action and preventive detention.

In Cascais, a 34-year-old man was placed in preventive detention following allegations of long-term physical and psychological abuse against his 67-year-old mother. The Public Security Police (PSP) reported a pattern of aggressive and humiliating behavior, including death threats, physical assaults, and the use of a kitchen knife. The suspect also allegedly coerced the victim into writing a statement claiming she would leave the residence voluntarily while filming her with a mobile phone.

In a separate Cascais case, a 41-year-old woman was detained for allegedly assaulting her parents and two minor children. Authorities stated the woman, who struggles with substance use and a personality disorder, used objects like frying pans and broomsticks to commit violence, and reportedly stabbed her father in the forearm with a kitchen knife.

In Mafra, a 40-year-old man was detained after fatally stabbing his 35-year-old girlfriend. The suspect, who allegedly threatened his mother during the incident, was apprehended by a GNR patrol while walking to a pharmacy covered in blood and wielding the weapon. He faces charges related to homicide and aggravated threats.

In Arraiolos, a 42-year-old man with a criminal record was placed in pretrial detention for aggravated domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend. The Public Ministry alleges he engaged in coercive control, stalking, and the unauthorized distribution of private footage.
