Dominic Fritz ends Timișoara mayoral mandate amid political tension

Dominic Fritz, president of the USR party, is concluding his term as Mayor of Timișoara following the implementation of new integrity legislation. The mandate ends prematurely due to a conflict of interest ruling by the National Integrity Agency (ANI). Fritz has stated that his departure is a result of political decisions by a “toxic parliamentary majority” rather than a change in public opinion.

To ensure continuity in Timișoara, Fritz introduced a leadership team consisting of Vice-Mayors Ruben Lațcău and Paula Romocean, alongside City Manager Matei Creiveanu. During his six-year tenure, Fritz highlighted achievements such as attracting 500 million euros for city projects, investing in school infrastructure, and modernizing the public transport fleet.

On the national stage, Fritz has officially called for early parliamentary elections, arguing that the current political crisis is affecting the economy and public confidence. He declared that the USR will refuse to support any new government led by the PSD. Simultaneously, Fritz faces legal challenges from political opponents; Sorin Grindeanu of the PSD has announced intentions to file a criminal complaint regarding Fritz's comments about a meeting with the US Ambassador, while Cristian Popescu Piedone has also filed a criminal complaint against him.
