Dominic Fritz loses mayoral mandate following court ruling

Dominic Fritz, the Mayor of Timișoara and a leader of the USR party, has lost his mandate following a definitive decision by the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ICCJ). The ruling upheld a previous decision by the Timișoara Court of Appeal regarding a conflict of interest.

Following this decision, PSD leader Sorin Grindeanu alleged that USR MEPs, through the Renew Europe group, attempted to push a resolution in the European Parliament's LIBE Committee to question the rule of law in Romania. Grindeanu claimed this move was an attempt to protect Fritz, suggesting such actions could jeopardize Romania's access to 770 million euros from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
