Dominican Republic political leaders address security and historical legacies

Dominican political figures and parties are addressing diverse issues ranging from historical commemorations to current security concerns. The Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD) is marking the 63rd anniversary of the 1963 coup d'état that overthrew President Juan Bosch, calling for party unity and the preservation of his democratic legacy.

In contemporary politics, PLD presidential aspirant Abel Martínez has emphasized the need to combat rising crime through a combination of law enforcement and social prevention, specifically highlighting education as a key tool. Meanwhile, the Partido Revolucionario Dominicano (PRD) has announced a firm opposition stance against the current government and is seeking to build a coalition for the 2028 elections. PRD President Miguel Vargas Maldonado also called for a unified national response to citizen insecurity.

Additionally, the PLD is organizing an internal consultation for October 18 to gauge support among its presidential aspirants for 2028. Concerns regarding political financing were also raised by CONEP President Celso Marranzini, who warned that irregular campaigning could allow organized crime to infiltrate political funds.
