PLD prepares internal consultation for 2028 presidential candidates

The Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) is preparing for an internal consultation on October 18 to gauge support among members and citizens for its 2028 presidential candidates. The party faces several strategic challenges, including maintaining internal unity to avoid previous divisions, improving its standing from third place, and determining future political alliances.

The party has established regulations for the eight registered aspirants to ensure equity and transparency during the process. Current candidates include Gonzalo Castillo, Francisco Javier García, Francisco Domínguez Brito, Manfred Mata, Mario Bruno, and Luis de León. Notably, former Vice President Margarita Cedeño, who was not on the official list of presidential aspirants, suggested she may consider running for local office in the 2028 elections.

In a related proposal, candidate Francisco Javier García has called for the institutionalization of electoral debates in the Dominican Republic to increase political credibility and allow voters to compare candidate platforms on key issues such as the economy, security, and education.
