The Dominican Republic is facing significant social and administrative challenges related to migration and public services. Senator Omar Fernández has raised alarms regarding the impact of Haitian migration on the education system, noting that Haitian student enrollment in public schools rose from 25,000 in 2007 to over 205,000 in 2025. This 716% increase has coincided with approximately 141,500 Dominican students leaving the public system, shifting the student ratio from one Haitian student per 100 Dominicans to one per 13. In response to public school capacity shortages, the government is assisting 15,000 students in private institutions.

In recent enforcement operations, the Dirección General de Migración (DGM) and other security forces detained 3,012 undocumented foreigners between August 21 and August 23, while 3,076 individuals were deported through various border crossings.

Separately, a grim discovery was made at the DGM headquarters in Santo Domingo, where the body of 39-year-old Nelson de los Santos was found in a state of decomposition inside a company vehicle that had been parked for ten days. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death.
