Dominican Republic CNSS approves high-cost medication coverage amid oncology criticism
The National Council of Social Security (CNSS) in the Dominican Republic has approved the 100% coverage of 13 high-cost medications for 16 catastrophic diseases through the High-Cost Medication Fund (FOMAC). This measure aims to eliminate copayments and reduce family expenses by utilizing joint purchasing mechanisms to optimize resources.
However, the Dominican Society of Medical Oncology (SODOM) has criticized the decision. Dr. Miguel Monanci, president of SODOM, stated that the selected molecules have low usage and lack the efficacy demonstrated by innovative therapies approved by the FDA and EMA, particularly for breast cancer. The society also raised concerns regarding existing delays of over a year in the delivery of treatments through the Ministry of Public Health.
To support this expansion, the Social Security Treasury (TSS) announced a new per capita rate for additional dependents, including parents and children over 21, which will be reflected in October payments.
