Dominican producers urge President Abinader to review INDOCASABE law
Producers of casabe and cassava in the Dominican Republic are calling on President Luis Abinader to observe the law creating the National Casabe Institute (INDOCASABE) before its promulgation. The sector expresses concern that the current legislative framework lacks direct representation for those involved in the production and commercialization of these traditional goods.
The Association of Casaberos of Monción (ASOPROCAMON) specifically requested that the law be modified to include cassava and casabe producers within the institution's governance. ASOPROCAMON president Paulino Peralta stated that while the organization does not oppose the creation of INDOCASABE, they seek a consensus-based solution where producers have a voice and vote on the board of directors.
Producers argue that their expertise is essential for the institute to effectively manage its responsibilities, which include financing, training, research, and marketing. They fear that without sectoral representation, the new institutional framework may not reflect the practical realities of the producers and merchants who depend on this supply chain for their livelihoods.
