Dominican Republic adopts IHRA definition of antisemitism

During the Sixth Latin American Forum Against Antisemitism in Santo Domingo, President Luis Abinader announced that the Dominican Republic is formally adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. This move makes the nation the seventh Latin American country to endorse the framework.

Foreign Minister Víctor ‘Ito’ Bisonó emphasized the importance of education and legislative tools in combating hate and intolerance. The decision aligns with the country’s historical role in providing asylum to Jewish refugees in Sosúa during the 1930s and 1940s. To preserve this legacy, the government has pledged RD$50 million toward a new building for the Jewish Museum of Sosúa.

The IHRA definition provides a framework for identifying antisemitism by addressing specific manifestations of hatred against Jewish people, their institutions, and places of worship. The adoption was supported by various international delegates, including representatives from the United States and the Combat Antisemitism Movement.
