Dominican Republic initiates energy storage and generation projects
The Dominican Republic is advancing four key processes to expand its energy storage capacity and strengthen electrical generation. This initiative is part of a strategy by the presidential Electricity Cabinet to ensure supply security and meet rising energy demand.
Minister of Energy and Mines Joel Santos announced that two of these processes focus on Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). One plan involves adding 200 megawatts (MW) of storage capacity with a four-hour duration to existing renewable energy parks. A second process targets projects with definitive concessions, with expected generation capacities between 600 and 900 MW, including storage equivalent to 50% of that capacity.
The remaining two processes involve thermal generation. One is aimed at existing power plants, while the other seeks to contract new plants to meet projected electricity demand growth beyond 2032. These measures aim to create a more reliable, flexible, and resilient electrical system.
