Dominican Republic targets energy loss reduction through digitalization

The Dominican Republic government has launched a strategy to reduce electrical distribution losses, which currently stand at approximately 39%, aiming to lower this figure by 4 to 5 percentage points by 2028. Energy and Mines Minister Joel Santos stated that the plan focuses on energy efficiency, digitalization of services, and intelligent demand management rather than solely increasing generation capacity.

The initiative includes rehabilitating over 2,000 kilometers of networks, installing 18 substations, and acquiring new transformers and smart meters. The government also projects the expansion of battery storage capacity to between 600 and 800 megawatts by 2028 to better integrate renewable energy and stabilize the system.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) has warned that these high energy losses hinder national competitiveness and discourage investment in sectors like free trade zones. The IDB suggests modernizing infrastructure, implementing independent regulation, and gradually recovering service costs while protecting vulnerable households.
