Dominican Republic issues widespread rain alerts as tropical wave approaches

The Dominican Republic's Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) warned that a mid‑level trough (vaguada) and an incoming tropical wave will create humid, unstable conditions across the country. The system is expected to produce moderate to strong showers, thunderstorms and wind gusts in the southern coastal strip in the morning and, by afternoon, across the northeast, southwest, eastern plains, Central mountain range and border zone.

The National Emergency Operations Center (COE) raised yellow alerts for 11‑12 provinces and the District National, while 10‑12 additional provinces remain under a green alert. Authorities advise residents to avoid crossing rivers, streams or ravines with high water levels, to stay away from beach facilities in affected areas, and to follow official bulletins. Risks include urban and rural flooding, river overflows, landslides and possible mudslides, especially in vulnerable zones.

Indomet also noted Saharan dust lowering air quality and raising heat‑related discomfort. Health recommendations urge people with respiratory issues to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, limit sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., and monitor official updates as the weather evolves through the weekend.
