Dominican Republic weather: Heat and afternoon storms

Overview

The Dominican Republic continues to face weather instability driven by tropical waves, troughs, and Saharan dust. Following the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly in late August, patterns in early September have shifted toward high temperatures and variable precipitation.

By September 9, the Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) reported that the combination of a tropical wave and a trough was expected to produce high temperatures alongside heavy rainfall. Affected provinces included Monte Plata, Hato Mayor, El Seibo, Sánchez Ramírez, parts of northern Santo Domingo, La Vega, and areas in the Cibao and border regions.

By September 8, weather conditions intensified as Indomet warned of extreme heat, with temperatures potentially exceeding 37 °C due to high concentrations of Saharan dust. The tropical wave and trough combination was expected to trigger heavy showers, electrical storms, and wind gusts.

On September 11, Indomet reported that a tropical wave would continue to trigger local showers, isolated thunderstorms, and occasional wind gusts. Morning showers with isolated thunder were expected in La Altagracia, Samaná, María Trinidad Sánchez, Duarte, Barahona, and Pedernales. Afternoon storms were anticipated in Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Sánchez Ramírez, Duarte, La Vega, Espaillat, Santiago, and Santiago Rodríguez.

Temperatures remain high, with maximums between 34 °C and 36 °C and higher thermal sensations. Authorities advise vulnerable groups—including children, the elderly, and pregnant women—to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Additionally, a warning has been issued for small and medium-sized vessels to exercise caution along the southern and southwestern Caribbean coasts due to abnormal waves.

Claims

What the coverage asserts, and how many sources carry each claim.

Coverage disagrees

Sources make claims that cannot both be true. CLSTR reports the disagreement; it does not decide who is right.

  • "Indomet forecast that a vaguada and an approaching tropical wave will cause showers, isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds across many provinces."

    vs

"A tropical wave moving south of the country will keep most cloud activity over the Caribbean Sea, having little impact on Dominican weather."

One claim states a tropical wave will have little impact on Dominican weather, while the other states it will cause showers, thunderstorms, and gusty winds.

  • "Venezuela is experiencing rainfall due to the movement of tropical waves 47 and 48." rnv.gob.ve

    vs

"Tropical wave N.º 30 moved from the east to central Venezuela, interacting with the Inter‑tropical Convergence Zone and a monsoon trough."

The claims attribute Venezuela's rainfall to different tropical waves (Wave 30 vs Waves 47 and 48).
