Dominican Republic authorities advance municipal waste management planning
Authorities, municipal leaders, and international cooperation agencies gathered at the National Forum on Integral Solid Waste Management Planning in Santo Domingo. The forum aims to drive the formulation and implementation of Municipal Integrated Solid Waste Management Plans (PMGIRS), as mandated by Law 225-20.
Participants emphasized that these plans should serve as practical tools for organizing services, guiding investments, and securing operational resources rather than just fulfilling regulatory requirements. The initiative promotes social inclusion, gender equity, and the integration of grassroots recyclers into the formal economy.
The forum is supported by organizations including Fedomu, PNUD, the Dominican Municipal League (LMD), and the Ministry of Environment, with support from the Norwegian Embassy. The goal is to address solid waste as a primary environmental challenge through strategic planning and a transition toward a circular economy.
