Dominican Republic municipal waste management initiatives
Overview
The Dominican Republic has taken steps to improve municipal waste management through both equipment distribution and strategic planning.
In early September, President Luis Abinader, via the Ministry of Administrative Affairs of the Presidency (MAPRE), delivered 50 garbage compactor trucks to various municipalities and districts. This initiative was intended to strengthen local waste collection capacities and address public health and environmental risks in areas with high waste accumulation.
Following this, authorities and international agencies convened at the National Forum on Integral Solid Waste Management Planning in Santo Domingo. The forum focused on implementing Municipal Integrated Solid Waste Management Plans (PMGIRS) as required by Law 225-20. Participants discussed using these plans to guide investments, organize services, and promote a circular economy, while also emphasizing social inclusion and the integration of grassroots recyclers into the formal economy.
