Dominican Republic reports surge in violent crime and police incidents

The Dominican Republic is experiencing a surge in violent crime and law enforcement incidents. In Santo Domingo Este, a 17-year-old adolescent was arrested for the fatal shooting of taxi driver Félix Valentín Casalinovo Trinidad during an InDrive service robbery. Authorities are still searching for three other suspects known by the aliases “Juan el Fantasma”, “Maclen”, and “La Leyenda”.

In Barahona, a police officer, Erasmy Moreta, was wounded in a leg during a shootout with suspects on a motorcycle. A civilian, Wilmer Lara Féliz, was also injured in the exchange. Meanwhile, in Santo Domingo Norte, Sergeant Major Pedro Luis Guerrero Ibis died after being shot in the chest during an armed robbery at a local bar and cockfighting establishment.

In San Juan, police intercepted a truck in Las Matas de Farfán carrying eight motorcycles, five of which were reported stolen. Two men were detained, and investigators are looking into whether the vehicles were intended for illegal sale in Haiti. These events have renewed national debate regarding juvenile delinquency and the safety of law enforcement officers.
