Dominican Republic law enforcement and security operations
Overview
The Dominican Republic has initiated various security and law enforcement measures across several regions. In the Verón–Punta Cana and Bávaro areas, President Luis Abinader announced a new preventive patrolling model involving 990 agents across 84 quadrants and 39 police corridors in La Altagracia to increase presence following recent violent incidents, such as an assault near the Verón–Punta Cana City Hall and gunfire in Villa Playwood. Simultaneously, authorities conducted targeted security operations in Barahona and Navarrete, resulting in arrests and the seizure of firearms and narcotics. In San Juan, police intercepted a truck in Las Matas de Farfán containing stolen motorcycles, with investigators looking into potential illegal sales in Haiti. Recent developments highlight escalating violence involving law enforcement and civilians. In Barahona, officer Erasmy Moreta was wounded in a shootout with suspects on a motorcycle; 19-year-old Axel Naviosky Ferreras, known as ‘Cutico’, surrendered to authorities in Santo Domingo after his legal team alleged that local police in Barahona refused to receive him. In Santiago, Oliver Rojas Núñez, alias ‘Chuky’ or ‘El Menor’, was killed during a confrontation with agents from the Criminal Investigation Subdirectorate (Dicrim). Fatalities and investigations continue in other regions. In Santo Domingo Norte, Sergeant Major Pedro Luis Guerrero Ibis was killed during an armed robbery. In Santo Domingo Este, a 17-year-old was arrested for the fatal shooting of taxi driver Félix Valentín Casalinovo Trinidad, while authorities search for suspects known as “Juan el Fantasma”, “Maclen”, and “La Leyenda”. In Nagua, police are investigating the death of Anderson Santos, alias ‘Vaguito’, following allegations that a dispute over a drug transaction led to a fatal shooting. Recent police operations have expanded into Duarte province, where arrests were made for theft, marijuana possession, and an attempted robbery of a minor.
