Dominican Republic aviation market sees growth and airline restructuring
Air traffic between Boston and the Dominican Republic is projected to grow by 24% in 2026, potentially exceeding 790,000 passengers. Data from the Civil Aviation Board (JAC) indicates that between January and August 30, 2026, 523,883 passengers traveled this route. This trend represents a significant increase from 2022, when traffic stood at 385,774 passengers, marking a cumulative growth of over 105% in four years.
JetBlue continues to lead this market expansion, with projections suggesting the airline could transport over 667,000 passengers by the end of 2026. The growth is also being driven by the entry of the Dominican airline Arajet into the market.
In a separate development within the Dominican aviation sector, Sky Cana is planning a progressive return to operations. Frank Díaz González, President of Sky Cana / Sky Holding, confirmed the company is undergoing strategic reorganization. The first phase involves the acquisition of an Embraer ERJ-145LR via SETRAD, expected to arrive in the Dominican Republic by late October 2026. The airline will initially focus on passenger charter flights within the Caribbean before potentially expanding into larger aircraft and regular services.
