Dominican Republic begins Horacio Vásquez canal rehabilitation

The Dominican government, through the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI), has begun rehabilitation work on the Horacio Vásquez canal in the municipality of Villa Vásquez, Montecristi. The project aims to improve irrigation efficiency for approximately 227,000 tareas of land.

This initiative is part of the Resilient Agriculture and Integrated Water Resources Management Project (PARGIRH), which is funded by the World Bank. The work focuses on improving the resilience and management of hydraulic infrastructure within the Yaque del Norte and Ozama–Isabela river basins.

Technical aspects of the project include concrete lining for nearly one kilometer of discontinuous sections to reduce water loss, the rehabilitation of gate systems at both new and old intake works, the construction of a gauging structure, and a retention structure to facilitate water capture for lateral canals.
