Dominican Republic infrastructure development
Overview
The Dominican Republic has initiated several infrastructure projects aimed at improving water management and transportation.
In Montecristi, the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INDRHI) began rehabilitating the Horacio Vásquez canal as part of the World Bank-funded Resilient Agriculture and Integrated Water Resources Management Project (PARGIRH). The project involves concrete lining, gate system rehabilitation, and the construction of gauging and retention structures to improve irrigation efficiency for approximately 227,000 tareas of land.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) is advancing the expansion and modernization of the Federico Basilis highway to support the development of Jarabacoa and La Vega. This phase involves managing land expropriation processes, with the ministry reporting that most acquisitions have been settled through social agreements and dialogue, though legal interventions have been used in exceptional cases to ensure construction continues.
