Dominican Republic braces for heavy rains and thunderstorms as vagua hits

The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) issued a bulletin warning that a vagua will bring scattered showers this morning, followed by stronger rain, thunderstorms, gusty winds and isolated hail in the afternoon and early evening across much of the country. The forecast cites hot temperatures of 31‑33 °C nationwide.

Alerts have been maintained for seven provinces, including the Gran Santo Domingo area, Monte Plata, San Pedro de Macorís, Sánchez Ramírez, San Cristóbal (Villa Altagracia), Monseñor Nouel and others, with the emergency operations center marking some zones as yellow alert and others as green. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and refrain from crossing swollen rivers or streams.

Indomet also warned of dangerous sea conditions on both coasts, recommending that small and vulnerable vessels remain in port. The agency stresses that the situation will be monitored over the next 48 hours as the vagua influences weather patterns.
