Central America and Caribbean Issue Severe Weather Alerts

National meteorological agencies in four countries warned of hazardous weather on May 20‑21, 2026. Guatemala’s INSIVUMEH forecasted severe local storms with heavy rain, strong winds and a risk of hail, heat and fire especially in the western and coastal regions. Ecuador’s Inamhi kept meteorological warning No. 36 active, citing intense rain and thunderstorms across the Amazon, Andean and coastal zones, and urging precautions against flooding and landslides. Argentina’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional issued a yellow wind alert for the western parts of Salta and Jujuy, expecting gusts of 50‑65 km/h and occasional spikes up to 90 km/h, and recommended securing objects and limiting travel. The Dominican Republic’s Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología reported that a mid‑tropospheric trough combined with a tropical wave would bring sunny mornings followed by moderate to strong afternoon showers, thunderstorms, strong wind gusts and occasional hail across numerous provinces, with heightened flood and landslide risks.

All agencies advised the public to stay informed, avoid unnecessary outings, secure belongings, stay hydrated and protect vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly and pregnant women.
