Dominican Republic courts hand 95 convictions, 191 trials in major corruption cases

Participación Ciudadana released its ninth Observatorio report, noting that in just two weeks Dominican Republic courts issued 95 first‑instance convictions and sent 191 suspects to full trial in three high‑profile corruption investigations.

The cases involve former military and police leaders Adán Cáceres Silvestre, Donald Guerrero and former INTRANT director Hugo Beras together with businessman José Ángel “Jochi” Gómez. Sentences range up to 20 years in prison, the dissolution of five companies, seizure of more than 160 properties, 115 vehicles, weapons, cash and luxury watches, and a collective indemnity of RD$5 billion to the state.

Judges Altagracia M. Ramírez de la Cruz and Yanibet Rivas oversaw the preliminary hearings, admitting over 90 % of the evidence and rejecting procedural challenges. The report also adds the Instituto Regional Oncológico del Cibao case in Santiago, flagged as a possible crime against humanity, to the observatory’s monitoring.

These judicial actions are presented by the civic movement as a significant step forward in the fight against administrative corruption and the strengthening of institutional accountability.
