Dominican Republic Emergency Agency Issues Flood Alerts for Six Provinces and Barahona

The Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE) placed six provinces—Santo Domingo, Monte Plata, San Cristóbal, Villa Altagracia, La Altagracia, and Hato Mayor—along with the Distrito Nacional under a green alert as a lingering vagua brings moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds across the country. The alert warns of possible river, stream and canyon overflows and sudden urban flooding, urging residents to avoid crossing swollen waterways and to stay away from coastal swimming areas.

On 20 May, COE confirmed that Barahona remains under the same green alert while the alert for Monte Plata was lifted. The agency highlighted localized showers in Peravia, Barahona, San José de Ocoa, Monseñor Nouel and Samaná, and cautioned that windy conditions could persist into the night. Small and medium‑sized vessels were advised to navigate close to the coast and exercise heightened caution due to rough seas on both the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts.
