Dominican Republic issues weather alerts for heavy rain and flooding
The Emergency Operations Center (COE) has issued a green alert for San Cristóbal, Gran Santo Domingo, and the Distrito Nacional due to forecasted moderate to heavy rains, thunderstorms, and wind gusts. These meteorological conditions, driven by increased humidity and easterly winds, pose risks of urban flooding and sudden rises in river and stream levels.
In Santo Domingo, heavy rainfall has already caused water accumulation on major roads, leading to significant traffic congestion on central avenues such as John F. Kennedy and Gregorio Luperón. Authorities have advised residents to avoid crossing swollen bodies of water and to remain vigilant in vulnerable areas.
While the Dominican Republic faces these weather patterns and high temperatures, the Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología (Indomet) reports that Tropical Storm Hanna and Tropical Storm Fay do not pose a threat to the country. High temperatures are expected to persist, with maximums between 33°C and 35°C, prompting health recommendations to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure.
