Dominican Republic braces for scattered showers and soaring temperatures as trough moves across island
The Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología (INDOMET) issued an advisory for Saturday, 13 June 2026, stating that a trough (vaguada) will keep the country under unstable conditions. Scattered rain is expected in the eastern and northeastern provinces – La Altagracia, La Romana, El Seibo, San Pedro de Macorís, Hato Mayor, Monte Plata, Samaná and parts of the Gran Santo Domingo. In the afternoon the showers will shift inland, reaching Hato Mayor, Sánchez Ramírez, Duarte, La Vega, Santiago Rodríguez, Santiago and Independencia. Alerts remain in force for Hato Mayor and El Seibo, while other provinces have had warnings lowered.
Temperatures will stay between 31 °C and 33 °C, with the heat index amplified by light concentrations of Saharan dust that reduce air quality. INDOMET recommends drinking ample water, wearing light‑coloured clothing and avoiding prolonged sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. A tropical wave off Mexico has the potential to develop cyclonically but poses no immediate threat to the Dominican Republic. The agency also notes that Sunday is expected to be mostly sunny and hot, with only isolated showers in limited areas.
