Dominican Republic faces structural challenge of high consumption versus low production

The Dominican Republic faces a structural economic weakness characterized by consuming significantly more than it produces in strategic sectors. While the nation has seen growth in tourism, free zones, telecommunications, construction, and services, it remains heavily dependent on importing food, manufactured goods, and finished products that could otherwise be produced or transformed locally.

To achieve true wealth, the country must shift from a consumer-driven society to a producer-driven one. This transition requires a cultural change, moving beyond the goal of merely securing employment toward fostering entrepreneurship, innovation, and the creation of value-added products and technologies. The objective is to empower citizens—from farmers to technicians—to become agro-industrial entrepreneurs, manufacturers, and exporters.
