Dominican Republic on alert for heavy rains and flooding
The Dominican Republic is facing significant weather risks as a trough and high humidity levels trigger heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and wind gusts across much of the country. The Center for Emergency Operations (COE) has placed several provinces under alert, including seven in yellow alert—Puerto Plata, Pedernales, Barahona, Espaillat, Bahoruco, Santiago, and Independencia—and numerous others in green alert.
Meteorological authorities, including Indomet, forecast rainfall accumulations of up to 200 millimeters, particularly in the southwest region and the Caribbean coast. In Santiago, flooding has already impacted approximately 150 homes in the Hoya de Caimito and Francisco del Rosario Sánchez sectors. Other areas, such as Puerto Plata, have also reported urban flooding.
The Ministry of Education (Minerd) has authorized regional and district authorities to suspend classes in vulnerable areas within yellow alert provinces if weather conditions pose a risk to students and staff. Emergency agencies have advised the population to avoid crossing rivers, streams, or ravines and to remain vigilant regarding potential landslides and urban flooding.
