Dominican Republic industries call for customs modernization
The Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) has emphasized that a modern and efficient customs system is a fundamental component of the nation's competitive infrastructure. During the industrial meeting 'Customs as a Strategic Ally for Productive Development,' AIRD President Julio Virgilio Brache noted that customs efficiency directly impacts supply chains, exports, and the ability of companies to invest and generate employment.
Brache highlighted progress in digitalization and trade facilitation, specifically mentioning the Authorized Economic Operator (OEA) mechanism. He also praised the coordination between customs and other institutions like the MICM, DGII, and the Public Ministry in combating smuggling and illicit trade.
Nelson Arroyo, Director General of Customs, reported that in the first seven months of the year, the risk system issued approximately 14,774 alerts in primary zones, resulting in a revenue increase exceeding 2,630 million pesos. Arroyo also noted that the 'Virtual Customs' project is a key part of the digital transformation agenda, aimed at restructuring digital platforms to provide a simpler and more integrated user experience.
