Dominican Republic industrial competitiveness and customs
Overview
The Dominican Republic continues to address industrial productivity and competitiveness challenges. While previous efforts focused on human capital and nearshoring potential, recent discussions have shifted toward specific structural and logistical requirements.
During the META RD 2036 Forum, the Executive Board of the Free Trade Zone Sector called for a transition from mere consensus to “concrete, measurable actions” to bolster competitiveness. Stakeholders identified critical threats, including uncertainty regarding United States tariff policies and rising competition from other nations. To mitigate these, they proposed eight strategic areas, including streamlining permits, international promotion, and bridging the gap between academic training and industrial needs.
Complementing these efforts, the Association of Industries of the Dominican Republic (AIRD) has identified customs modernization as a vital component of the nation’s competitive infrastructure. AIRD President Julio Virgilio Brache noted that customs efficiency directly impacts supply chains and investment capacity. In response, the Director General of Customs, Nelson Arroyo, highlighted the “Virtual Customs” project as a key part of a digital transformation agenda. This initiative aims to restructure digital platforms for a more integrated user experience. Recent data from the customs risk system shows that these digital efforts contributed to a revenue increase exceeding 2,630 million pesos in the first seven months of the year through improved detection of illicit trade.
