Dominican Republic weather alerts issued for heavy rains and flooding

The Dominican Republic is facing widespread weather instability due to a trough (vaguada) and diurnal heating. The Centro de Operaciones de Emergencias (COE) and the Instituto Dominicano de Meteorología (Indomet) have issued various alerts across the country, including green and yellow alerts for several provinces.

Key areas under alert for potential urban and rural flooding include Gran Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, San Pedro de Macorís, and several other provinces such as La Vega, Puerto Plata, and Espaillat. Forecasts indicate heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, wind gusts, and the possibility of isolated hail in certain regions.

Despite the precipitation, temperatures are expected to remain high, ranging between 31°C and 35°C. Authorities have advised the population, particularly vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and pregnant women, to stay hydrated and avoid direct sun exposure. Additionally, the COE has urged citizens to avoid crossing rivers or streams with high water volumes.
