Ciudad Colonial housing and facade restoration programs inaugurated

The Dominican Republic's Ministry of Tourism has inaugurated several urban and housing improvement programs in Ciudad Colonial, Santo Domingo. The initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for local residents while preserving the historic district's heritage.

Key components of the project include the Housing Improvement Program (Promevi), which is set to fully repair 140 homes, the Facade Recovery Program, and the 'Pinta tu Ciudad' project. Recent deliveries included the rehabilitation of 44 homes with structural issues, the recovery of 60 historic facades, and the renovation of 150 additional facades.

The projects are part of the Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program of Ciudad Colonial (PIDTUCCSD), executed in coordination with the Ministry of Culture and the National District Mayor's Office. The works are funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) with non-reimbursable cooperation from the European Union exceeding 190 million pesos.

Minister David Collado emphasized that the goal is to ensure residents can live in the historic center with dignity, preventing displacement by tourism. The programs specifically target vulnerable groups, including single mothers, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
