Dominican Republic state administration and urban projects

Overview

The Dominican Republic has implemented various state-led initiatives focused on fiscal oversight and urban development.

In September 2026, the Contraloría General de la República completed technical inspections of 337 public rental properties. Comptroller General Geraldo Espinosa noted that these inspections ensure properties meet “real institutional needs and technical requirements.” Concurrently, the Directorate of National Assets announced plans to recover 24 buildings to reduce annual government rental expenditures, which range between RD$10,000 and RD$12,000 million.

By October 2026, efforts expanded into urban renewal within Santo Domingo’s Ciudad Colonial through the Comprehensive Tourism and Urban Development Program (PIDTUCCSD). Executed in coordination with the Ministry of Culture and the National District Mayor's Office, the program is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank and includes over 190 million pesos in non-reimbursable cooperation from the European Union.

Tourism Minister David Collado inaugurated several components of this program, including the Housing Improvement Program (Promevi), the Facade Recovery Program, and the ‘Pinta tu Ciudad’ project. Promevi aims to fully repair 140 homes, with 44 residences already rehabilitated to address structural issues. These initiatives target vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, people with disabilities, and women heads of households, to ensure residents can live in the historic center with dignity and prevent displacement by tourism. Additionally, the restoration efforts have included the recovery of 60 historic facades and the renovation of 150 others.
