Dominican Republic lawmakers launch dialogue with motorbike taxi operators to tackle traffic chaos

The Permanent Commission on Mobility and Transport of the Dominican Republic’s Chamber of Deputies convened a meeting with representatives of motoconcho federations and associations to address violations of Law 63‑17, which governs mobility, land transport, transit and road safety. The session, held in the Hugo Tolentino hall of the Chamber, was chaired by commission president Deputy Brailyn Miguel Vargas Núñez, who emphasized the need for collective solutions to the country’s traffic disorder and announced an intensive agenda that will later include other transport sub‑sectors.

Deputy Tobías Crespo, the principal author of Law 63‑17, opened the dialogue urging participants to own and enforce the law. Testimony was given by María Taveras, a longtime transport sector worker who lost her son in a road accident two years ago, calling for urgent action to prevent further tragedies. Ramón Ramírez of the Dominican Motoconcho Federation reported that the Chamber is advancing a bill that formally recognizes the motoconcho activity as a valuable component of the national economy. All participants agreed on the need to raise awareness among motorcycle drivers to reduce accidents and street violence.
