Dominican Republic opens Monte Plata roads and receives 2026 Games torch

Vice President Raquel Peña inaugurated two new roads in the Monte Plata province—Monte Plata–Cevicos, a 44.25‑km route expected to benefit over 500,000 residents, and the 11.44‑km San Pedro‑Rincón Claro road serving more than 5,000 rural inhabitants. The projects, carried out by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications with financing from the Inter‑American Development Bank, aim to shorten travel times, support agricultural transport and improve local connectivity.

Later, Victor Pichardo, executive director of the Airport Authority, received the torch for the 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games in Monte Plata. The ceremony highlighted the province’s reputation as the “Capital of Sport” in the Dominican Republic, referencing athletes such as Elly De La Cruz and Olympic medalists Gabriel Mercedes, Luguelín Santos, Luisito Pie and Zacarías Bonnat. The event underscored the role of sport in regional development and community pride.
