Dominican Republic Hosts 2026 CAC Games
Entities: Paola Pérez · Marlies Mejías · Santo Domingo · Venezuela (team) · Walter Vargas
Overview
The XXV Central American and Caribbean Games opened on 24 July 2026 at the renovated Félix Sánchez Olympic Stadium, featuring a ceremony with more than 1,100 drones, 30,000 LED devices and a parade of 37 delegations. Roughly 6,200 athletes from 37 nations will compete in 40 sports through 8 August.
Early competition produced a spread of gold medals. Venezuela’s rowing duo César Amaris and José Güipe claimed the men’s lightweight double sculls, while Paola Pérez repeated as champion in the women’s 10 km open‑water swim. Cuba earned its first gold in the women’s road time‑trial, and its beach‑volleyball teams opened with straight‑set victories. Colombia’s Walter Vargas won the men’s individual time‑trial, and Mexico’s women’s archery team (Alejandra Valencia, Ángela Ruiz, Ana Paula Vázquez) and men’s archery team (Matías Grande, Raúl Rodríguez, Francisco Padilla) each secured gold.
To support the event, the Operadora Metropolitana de Servicios de Autobuses (OMSA) launched a free “Servicio de conexión con el Parque del Este” bus line. Four hundred ozone‑cleaned buses link directly to the Concepción Bona Metro station, providing continuous transport for residents, athletes, volunteers and officials. Executive Vice‑President Onéxico González highlighted the service’s role in the Games’ success.
The Dominican government’s investment of roughly RD$9 billion (US$154 million) in venue upgrades and urban projects is expected to leave a lasting legacy for sports and transportation infrastructure in Santo Domingo.
