Dominican Republic issues green alerts amid heat, rain and thunderstorms
The Dominican Republic’s Centre of Emergency Operations (COE) placed nine provinces and the Distrito Nacional under a green alert because of the risk of moderate to heavy rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds that could cause urban flooding, sudden river rises and landslides. The alert covers Santo Domingo, San Cristóbal, Monte Plata, San Juan, Santiago, Santiago Rodríguez, Dajabón, La Vega, Valverde and the Distrito Nacional, with authorities urging people to avoid crossing swollen rivers, stay hydrated, wear light clothing and limit sun exposure between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The Dominican Institute of Meteorology (Indomet) warned that a lingering vaguada together with an approaching tropical wave will generate showers, isolated thunderstorms and wind gusts across many provinces. Temperatures are expected to reach 33‑35 °C with heat‑index values up to 45 °C, especially in the northeast and central regions. The institute repeated its advice to remain well‑hydrated, use light‑coloured clothing and seek shade during the hottest hours.
Later, as rainfall decreased, COE lifted the green alert for seven provinces—El Ías Piña, Valverde, San Juan, Santiago Rodríguez, Santiago, Dajabón and La Vega—while continuing to monitor conditions and issue bulletins as needed.
