Dominican Republic postpones Calamar corruption hearing to August 19

The trial hearing in the high‑profile Calamar corruption case in the Dominican Republic has been delayed until August 19 after both the prosecution and defense asked for a continuance, which the court granted.

Former Finance Minister Donald Guerrero is among the principal defendants, alongside other former officials and private actors accused of diverting billions of pesos through irregular payments, land appropriations and other illicit schemes. The Prosecutor’s Office alleges crimes including criminal association, embezzlement, bribery, money laundering and illegal campaign financing. Earlier sessions resulted in five individuals, including ex‑Ministers Gonzalo Castillo and José Ramón Peralta, being cleared, while 35 accused remain to face a full trial.

The case is widely regarded as one of the most significant administrative corruption investigations in Dominican judicial history.
