Dominican Republic power grid faces summer demand, CUED urges energy savings

The Dominican Republic’s electricity grid is experiencing heightened demand during the hot summer months, leading to larger household bills. The Consejo Unificado de Empresas Distribuidoras (CUED) has warned thousands of families about the inevitable rise in consumption as fans, air‑conditioners, televisions, refrigerators and other devices run longer.

CUED outlined a series of energy‑saving measures: maximise natural ventilation and use fans, switch off devices completely rather than leaving them on standby, unplug chargers when not in use, run washing machines, dryers and irons outside the peak period of 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., prefer LED or low‑consumption lighting, set air‑conditioners to 24‑25 °C and keep filters clean—clean filters can cut energy use by up to 15 %. The council said it is working to reinforce the network to handle the surge and will continue monitoring any service incidents while keeping the public informed.
