Dominican Republic targets electrical grid modernization by 2030

The Dominican Republic government has outlined an ambitious strategic plan to transform the national electrical system by 2030. The initiative aims to increase household electricity coverage to 99.5% through significant investments in network expansion, modernization of substations, and the implementation of smart meters to improve consumption monitoring and reduce energy losses.

Key components of the plan include strengthening transmission and distribution networks and increasing generation capacity to meet rising demand driven by economic growth. Notable developments include the Manzanillo Power Land thermoelectric plant and over 1,200 megawatts of new generation capacity currently under development.

On a local level, the electricity distributor Edeeste is investing RD$843,117,091 into the CAPO09 and CAPO11 circuits in Capotillo, Distrito Nacional. This project involves installing 240 distribution transformers and 450 lights to normalize service for more than 18,000 users. The government seeks to mitigate frequent power outages and rising costs through these long-term infrastructure improvements.
