Dominican Republic public infrastructure maintenance
Overview
The Dominican Republic is addressing a cycle of neglecting public infrastructure maintenance, which has historically led to expensive rehabilitations or demolitions of hospitals, bridges, roads, and sports facilities.
In preparation for the Santo Domingo 2026 Central American and Caribbean Games, the government has allocated roughly 9 billion pesos to renovate 16 sports complexes and construct a new pavilion. President Luis Abinader highlighted the need for permanent conservation mechanisms, noting that the Félix Sánchez Stadium was in “deplorable condition”.
Parallel to these efforts, a recovery program is targeting 64 abandoned or underutilized state properties identified by the National Assets Directorate. A second phase of this initiative involves investing 762 million pesos into 24 buildings, including the Don Antonio Guzmán Fernández government building, which had not seen intervention in 46 years. The government intends to use savings from reduced rental costs to fund the ongoing maintenance of these recovered assets.
